Bored, Trapped in Your Job?

September 4th, 2008 Posted in The Work Place

When you landed that new job, the world looked great. Now it’s been a while, and one of your worst fears has come true — you’re unhappy in your job. When you’re spending at least five days a week at work, it makes sense that you’d want to like what you’re doing. But there are times when you’re in a position or company that doesn’t work for you.

If you’re unhappy with your job — and everybody around you probably already knows it — it might be time for a career transition. Results from an Experience.com survey provide some insight into making the change. According to the survey, the top signal that it’s time to transition to a new job is not the boss yelling at you. In fact, the number-one warning sign is:

  • Your job has become boring. Most people are not in it just for the money. On the contrary, they’re
looking for something that gives them the chance to make a difference. If, in fact, you’re finding a lack of intellectual stimulation and challenge, you have lots of company — nearly 30 percent of respondents cited this as their biggest indicator it’s time to leave a job.
  • Another warning signal to workers that it may be time to make a transition is the lack of growth opportunities. If you’re in a dead end job, with no place to move (unless a lot of people grow
old and retire), you’re in trouble. Twenty-two percent of respondents felt trapped in a position with little room for career progression.
  • Others felt they were receiving inadequate pay or benefits. It may not all be about money,
but some of it certainly is. Do you feel underpaid? Do you have lousy (or no) benefits? Seventeen percent of employees feel the economic pinch, and when that happens, may have to decide whether their job is really worth it.
  • Work friends are very important. If your relationships with co-workers have gone bad, that’s a definite sign that it’s time to move on. Seventeen percent of those surveyed agreed — if you’re not getting along, you’re going to feel like you’re suffocating.
  • Lack of investment in the company’s goals/mission.
This is more than just a self-esteem thing, but was mentioned by 13% of the respondents as a key factor indicating a career change. You need to be part of the big picture, or you’re not in the picture at all.

Once you encounter the warning signs that it might be time to make a career transition, how long do you wait before you leave?

Most people (52%) said they would wait at least a year to see if it improved. Others were not as patient and hopeful. Thirty-two percent of respondents said they would quit as soon as they found another job, while 16% reported they would stay no longer than six months.

“When you clearly communicate you are under-challenged, wait a few months to see if your superior
responds, and if not, it’s time to take your knowledge and expertise to a company that will let you grow,” one respondent said.

True, for sure if a job nolonger provides a suitable challenge, i would call it quits. Forexample, you may be working in an organization where they set targets but it the end you find actually they are the ones responsible for your failure to meet them, either because of poor facilitation, demotivation, poor communication skills among others.

    Thamk you

    Bored at your Job?

One of the main reasons many people are bored, unsuccessful and do not excel in life is because they selected professions alien to their natural talents/strengths to train themselves in and practice.

Research carried out among children, youth and adults in different settings in 15 countries indicated that 95% of people are not living meaningful and joyful lives.

The way to correct this is as follows and has been posted at the following website: http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections/BlogCentral/frmBlogComments.aspx?BLOGID=308

How to Succeed and Excel in Life now!

    1) Find out who you really are – Your thoughts – Your Will – Your Skills; These are Natural Talents/Strengths that you inherited from birth which give you POWER 2) Establish your objective & vision in life and what you want to be, while focusing on the above as you can SHINE and EXCEL in everything you practice, only if you do so. 3) Verify if there are any blockages that prevent you from attaining your objective & vision. Many (95%) children/youth/adults are blocked/have problems and fail to succeed and Excel in life as they do not have a clear vision and the Emotional, Mental, Spiritual and Physical aspects in life are not balanced 4) Get advice and guidance from people/elders who are enlightened or have Excelled on how to correct/remove blockages.

Very often you need to identify and Polish your Thoughts, Drive and Skills, have a clear vision and objective in life and challenge yourself to enhance your education, personal relationships, employability and career to attain total personal and job satisfaction in life. If you are on the right track you will never idle or be bored, as you mind will be at work 24/7 to refine your inborn skills and maintain your market (Clients). Of course you can learn a profession or trade, which is ALIEN to you, but you will NEVER be 100% successful in life. Do you WANT to become like the 5% of people who are successful, excel and content in the world? If so, IDENTIFY WHO YOU ARE and REFINE yourself first. http://www.tidycentre.com

All the best in your journey to total success.

I would advise those with jobs to try much and study the company political environment before intervining so much. This can be done at induction or probation period. After observing this, then one can easily adopt or decide to turn down the offer.
In addition, do your best and do not allow boredom, loss of interest, demotivation, frustrations, come your way. Do your best, leave a good record until the time to quit.

    thanks

Really, i feel a company can kill your skills and opportunities when you dont turn around and make up an independent mind. some people fear to resign for fear of the way forward, but it take courage to wake up and decide that this Job is not worth me, then you can realise that some other opportunities exist out there, other than being tied in one place and you can look for other opportunities. For example Some companies prohibit their employees from receiving phone calls during working ours!! when will such employees ever get other opportunities, how can they be contacted for other Job interviews. So to me resigning from a Job that bores stresses you and you start from zero to hurnt for a new Job wouldnt be a Problem and i do encourage it. Thanks.

In Uganda, our eduacation system does not directly address the needs and therefore solutions to our society. Take a look at Engineering, sincerely after four(4)yeras at University a graduate needs through basic practical training for him or her to even solve a small problem when his car is stack. Now once he joins the world of work,Experience will be needed, so he will have to start from lower levels(Thats if accepts to bend low, the only people to learn from are the experienced people at work who are more times than not illitrate and scaced of the young inexperienced graduate, So its at this time that all kinds of oppressions and name spoiling in the eyes of the boss will commence, thereby frustrating this person who as a matter of must will have to quit as a short cut.

your job becomes boring when the boss requires you to do the same things the same old way, no new idea is wecome, this kills your creativity and development hence its better to quit.

  11. Patronella Says:

Jobs that bore are like a bad marriage, if your job gets boring step outside your comfortzone and look around.

    True True True!
You know there is this tendency that jobs are nowhere to be seen and there4 glue yoself to what you have. This wd be good but there is when conditions go out of hand. There are these Bossess who think they have made it in life and therefore oppress everyone below their management. Such people need to be left alone and you try your luck some where else. It hurts to work for someone who does not appreciate and worst of all who does not respect you as her employee. The fact that the organisation needs employees to produce results means that the Boss cannot work alone and therefore should respect yo.
I beleive that success comes after toiling and if you find that your job is graveyard, try to quit and who knows… another opportunity might be near.
I hate this business of tough restrictions at work like talking to no one apart from a client. I hate it and that is the reason why I am quiting mine come the end of this Novemer 2009. Next year will cater for itself!.
    I salute yo friends.
    Bye
